Brought to you by the folks behind Random Access Music, the second annual Queens New Music Festival is coming to LIC’s The Secret Theatre’s Main Stage from May 16-19, 2013. The theater is located at 44-02 23rd Street in LIC (GMAP). In the words of the organizers, “The mission of the festival is to promote new music in Queens by focusing on the wealth of composers, musicians, and ensembles living and working in Queens, as well as highlighting artists from other parts of New York City and the country.” And believe us, there are many great musicians (composers and performers) living in Queens.

This concert is the result of the call for proposals that happened in 2012. Nine diverse programs were chosen, from established and emerging composers, choreographers, ensembles, and artists. Here are some of the highlights of the Festival:

Highlights of the second annual festival include the newly established Periapsis Music and Dance ensemble presenting new music with dance, the Kaufman Music Center’s Face the Music program featuring exceptionally gifted young New Yorkers, a staged theatrical performance of urban poetry and art song, two different programs highlighting Japanese and Spanish heritages in New York City, plus more cutting-edge music by some of today’s most exciting composers and composer-led musical ensembles.

If you want to experience the whole shebang, you can purchase an all-access festival pass for $50. Saturday or Sunday one-day passes are $30, and single tickets for individual performances are $20. You can purchase tickets online, even today! The program sounds pretty awesome, so if you are interested or into new music, this is a great opportunity to hear some great new works.
