The NY Times reports that the house that was featured in the Woody Allen film, Radio Days, survived Hurricane Sandy. There was some damage, though – the basement flooded so there will be mold, plus it need to be pumped and the destroyed contents disposed of, and the boiler needs to be replaced. But these are easily fixed sorts of things, compared to many of the homes on the Rockaway peninsula – ones that were swept off their foundations by the water, or burned to the ground by fire.
To remind you of Radio Days, here’s a clip:

There are some great outside shots of the Rockaways at the start. The house itself was used for both outside and some inside shots during the movie.
The current owners, Lee Quinby and Matt K. Matsuda, bought the house in 2005 for half a million dollars. They are both academics, and in light of Hurricane Sandy, their professions have new meaning – Ms. Quimby studies catastrophe and doomsday belief in American Culture, and directed the film, “Facing the Waves” about the Rockaways; Mr. Matsuda recently wrote a book on life on or near the Pacific Ocean.
It turns out that nature is not without a sense of irony.
