Although he mostly sings in English, Joe Bataan is known as the father of New York Latin Soul. In the 1970s, the Spanish Harlem native, whose heritage is Filipino and African-American, popularized the phrase “Salsoul” while recording with Spanish-language superstars such as Willie Colon, Ruben Blades and La Lupe. This Saturday, December 8, Bataan and his band will get Flushing Town Hall moving and grooving to his hybrid sounds. Boogaloo, Latin Soul, R&B, Salsa, Disco, Jazz, Rap, is there anything this guy doesn’t sing?
