As much as we love the written word, sometimes the unique, hodgepodge character of Queens is best represented in images – which is why we want to give a shout-out to the photographers who document the borough. There are plenty of awesome NYC-based photo blogs, but these two are special in that most of their content is focused on Queens.

Cate Franklyn of Astoria uses her photography skills to make us see the beauty of our urban environment. She gathers her photos into themed collections; each one reveals an uncommon perspective on the surroundings that may have never occurred to most people who live in the area. Some of our favorite recent posts include Autumn in Astoria, a remarkable collection of fall colors and forms found in and around Astoria Park; and Seeing Art in a Desolate Landscape, a set of photos that turn industrial remnants of LIC into beautiful sculptures.

Braden, the photographer behind This is Not a Queens Photo Blog (or a Pipe), documents quirky signs and sights around Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights and beyond. A couple of recent photos captured a sale on prickly pear cactus pads in Corona and a graffiti heart above sprouts of grass in Astoria. Taken as a whole, his Tumblr feed depicts the diversity, creativity, humor, and great views that we are lucky to have in Queens.
