Necessity is the mother of invention, and the Christmas season has encouraged it even further for two local friends. Enter NYC Trees Direct, a Queens-based startup company that delivers quality Christmas trees to New Yorkers at a discounted price. The NY Daily News reports that Astoria-based public school teacher Harold DeLucia and UWS-based construction foreman and Josh Lanzera realized that a Christmas tree delivery service had a real market after witnessing the success of Tyler’s Trees, a Manhattan-based tree delivery service now in its fifth year. It has continued to do brisk business during the holidays. They figured they could do the same thing; thus NY Trees Direct was born.

So far they’ve sold about 100 trees and at much cheaper prices than Tyler’s (which they call “mind-boggling”). They charge $85 for a 5-foot Balsam Fir to $169 for a 9-foot Fraser Fir, all of which come from the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada. You can purchase the tree online or choose one in person at their stand at 21st St. and 28th Ave. in Astoria (GMAP). They’ll deliver the tree the same day you order or pick it out, along with installing it with a complimentary tree stand. And why not trim that tree while listing to classic Christmas tunes on Songza, another western Queens startup company!

The NYDN article mentions a produce market that Lanzera and DeLucia want to open up soon, called The Farmer’s Daughter. We’ll keep an eye out for that.
