The South and West Forum reports that the Woodhaven library (GMAP) is going to get a much-needed renovation, starting this winter. It will “take place in two phases and will bring several new additions including a new checkout system, new shelving and new computer tables.” An ADA-compatible bathroom will also be installed on the first floor. According to the local Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley’s (D-Middle Village) office, the first phase will cost $674000, but the cost for the second phase is unknown, meaning the cost for the entire project is unknown. Councilwoman Crowley’s office has allocated $713,000 total for the project.

Locals say that this renovation is really overdue. In the words of Councilwoman Crowley, “While we’ve had many libraries renovated throughout the city over the years, the Woodhaven one has been forgotten about.” This is a far cry from its early days when by 1920 (the library started in 1910), the Woodhaven library had the largest circulation in the system.

The hope is that the library will be able to stay open while construction is happening, but that may be difficult at times. Alternate solutions are being considered. One idea was the have a library van in the parking lot to provide some services; this approach was done while the Elmhurst library was under construction.
