Peter Greenberg, one of America’s most respected travel journalists, published a fascinating article about how “Queens has become cool.” The article is called “Beyond Manhattan: Rediscovering the Neighborhoods of Queens,” and discusses how – instead of Manhattan – Queens has become the destination for “under 30s… to start families and find spaces to create art and theater and to open restaurants important enough to be reviewed by top critics.”

Written by Queens native Phyllis Berger, the article profiles the neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City, and Jackson Heights. Berger celebrates what makes each neighborhood cool, such as Astoria’s history, Jackson Heights’ diversity, and LIC being the next big thing in NYC real estate. The article also features popular sights and eateries in each neighborhood, like Astoria’s Steinway Factory and Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden; LIC’s Gantry Plaza State Park and the coffee shop Sweetleaf; and Jackson Heights’ garden apartments and the delicious Taqueria Coatzingo.

Berger’s article is the first in a series celebrating Queens. Her next entry will feature Rockaway, Flushing, and Floral Park.
