Cool mapping site - Stamen - where we see Queens in various ways

Over on Pinterest we caught sight of this cool mapping site via Queens Mamas. Stamen makes it easy for anyone to create a map with different textures – Toner, Terrain, Watercolor, Burning Map, and Trees, Cabs & Crime (only available in SF right now). We decided to check out Queens (of course!) with the various options. First is Toner (“These high-contrast B+W (black and white) maps are featured in our Dotspotting project. They are perfect for data mashups and exploring river meanders and coastal zones.”):
Then there’s Terrain (“Orient yourself with our terrain maps, featuring hill shading and natural vegetation colors. These maps showcase advanced labeling and linework generalization of dual-carriageway roads.”):
Here’s Burning (“These “heat maps” use toner-lines as the foundation on which to draw fiery animations.”):
And finally, our favorite, Watercolor, which reminds us of the dog map (“Reminiscent of hand drawn maps, our watercolor maps apply raster effect area washes and organic edges over a paper texture to add warm pop to any map.”):
It’s so interesting to see the borough in these different ways. Anyone can create a map (minimum 256 and maximum 2,000 px). You can see various maps other people have created, too. Have fun!
