Last Saturday Kevin from Forgotten NY took a stroll from North to South through Greenpoint; the results are up on his site. Greenpoint is a unique mix both culturally and architecturally and is bound to change dramatically over the coming years as the waterfront is redeveloped. Built in 1895, the Mechanics and Traders Bank Building (above), which now houses the offices of the Polish newspaper Novy Dziennik, has always been one of our neighborhood faves. Tom Fletcher at NYC-Architecture.com also digs this structure, citing its “brooding but glorious Renaissance Revival” design composed of “Pompeian red terra-cotta, brick, and rock-face brownstone.” So go for a stroll!

Great building. A friend of mine lives down the block. Appearantly many scenes from the recently released “Interpreter” were filmed inside the top floor apartments.
