More than 70 agents attended a broker open house Thursday night for the John C. Kelley Mansion at 247 Hancock Street, Bed Stuy’s biggest and priciest listing, asking $6,000,000. Among the distinguished guests were State Senator Kevin Parker of Flatbush and Mipam Thurman, Uma Thurman’s brother.

Thurman is switching professions and plans to become a real estate agent. He took his tests last week and is talking to Ban Leow about working in Halstead’s Bed Stuy office. After a grueling two and a half year search for a house, he and his wife landed in East Flatbush, where they have a two-month-old and are renovating. He would like to help other buyers, he said. Previously, he worked in digital advertising and planning for well-known Apple reseller Tekserve.

The champagne flowed freely, as did the live piano music and hor d’oeuvres from nearby restaurant Beso.

We hear the house already has several offers near ask and owner Claudia Moran would prefer to sell to an “end user,” not a developer. As a partygoer pointed out, the house is one of two Montrose Morris mansions currently on the market — the other being the former house of Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany at 17 Prospect Park West in Park Slope that is on the market for more than twice the price, or $14,000,000.

If you would like to see the John C. Kelley mansion yourself, there will also be an open house for non-brokers, this Sunday, November 16, from noon to 1:30 pm.

By the way, the house looked to be in very good condition!!

  1. Montrose Morris—
All I’m asking question is how seriously does Brownstoner want its readers to take it. I want to take it seriously. I understand that it’s part of the complex nature of running a site like this where Brownstoner has to both seek classified-style ads from Halstead and report on Halstead properties. But Brownstoner complicates that relationship by not only reporting on the properties but also going to the party and focusing on the fact that Uma Thurman’s brother was there and might want to join Halstead. Then, to have a Halstead broker under a pseudonym comment that the house is great when a lot of people who google this house come to this page without knowing that the person who’s writing this post works for Halstead further muddies the water.
    .
I do think that when Amzi Hill took a job as a broker he probably should have changed his relationship with the site in the same way an anonymous commenter on a movie site should stop commenting anonymously on the movies his company releases. But I’m far more interested in what Brownstoner’s code of conduct should be moving forward in an area with a lot of ambiguity.

  2. Soooo, a brokers open with a blogger, a politician who allegedly lost his home to foreclosure, the brother of an actress who hasn’t worked in years, bad mexican food served alongside champagne….sounds sophisticated.

  3. While he may not be news worthy to you, he must be to some. I remember seeing some articles about him a couple of months ago about him looking for a place in Brooklyn. I had never heard of him before those articles, but some one must feel he is newsworthy. There must be things you would feel that are news worthy, that others may not.

  4. petty, amanda. It is a thread about party for brokers for the mansion. So even
folks here who haven’t read about Amzi on here — would easily assume a broker.
The thread is a peak into a unique house going up for sale and party to introduce it.
Somehow I doubt you could afford it anyway.

  5. No, but posting under a pseudonym about how great the house is when your business will receive a commission if the house is sold for ask does not speak well of Halstead. The whole thing is kind of strange. Halstead pays to advertize properties on this site, right? Then the site hypes Halstead’s property. Then one of Halstead’s agents, under a different name, comments on how nice the house is. The house looks great, I love this neighborhood, and I read this site all the time, but some separation here of content, advertizing, and commenters seems valuable to me.
