July 15, 2005, NY Newsday — Williamsburg still rules Kings County as the 20-somethings’ destination of choice. The drawback to being so hot for so long? Someone eventually gets burned. These days, one-bedrooms rent from $1,300 for a standard apartment to $1,900 for lofts with 13-foot ceilings, said Gea Elika, founder of citycrybs.com, an online housing marketplace. Higher rents mean more people sharing apartments, said Scott Elyanow, an agent for Citi Habitats Inc. who lives in the neighborhood. “At the end of the day, [people] just need a place to crash,” he said. They are willing to share living space, he added, “and use the neighborhood as their playground.” Danny Lockwood, 24, stumbled upon Williamsburg two years ago after moving from California to further his career as a percussionist. “Everybody is pretty youthful, there are good bars, and it’s close to the city,” Lockwood said. “It’s young and seems to be entrepreneurial. It’s kind of nice to be around that.”.

  1. we live there now and i hve to say it’s grown on me. with diner down the street and the best cheese shop around, i’d say it’s grown up with some of it’s denizens. that said, i am looking forward to less dog poop on the sidewalks of clinton hill…

  2. You have probably moved to different edge group. I am 30 and can not take Billisburg as well as I use to.
It was fun 6 years ago, excitement of discovery, hidden cool places like Galapagos (there was nothing else on that street back then)
Now it feels like everybody is less then 20 and it is like a giant frat party.
It is so over for me.

  3. I will never understand Williamsburg. The place is downright UGLY and industrial. Graffiti everywhere, old abondoned buildings. The downtown area looks like crap on Grand Street.
Compared to neighborhoods like Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Heights, Park Slope…COME ON!! The hipsters can have this dump!
Cheaper areas are always more “trendy” because younger people can move in. But everytime I drive through I want to hurry and get the hell outta there!
