National Magazine Has Finger on Local Pulse

A decade ago, the 2.4-km stretch of Fifth Avenue that forms the western edge of the Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, was the grim preserve of drug dealers, thugs and the demimonde. Not anymore. Thanks to the city’s skyrocketing real estate market, some campaigning locals and a few pioneering investors, a once bleak thoroughfare of boarded-up shops and unsavory bodegas has been transformed into one of the hippest shopping and dining destinations in the Big Apple. Today, this section of Fifth Avenue, dubbed “Restaurant Row” by some, is luring visitors and locals alike with top-notch cuisine and cool boutiques.
Park Slope Becoming One of NY’s Coolest [Time Magazine]
this article is not for the people here. it is for people in other states who know next to nothing about new york let alone brooklyn. that’s how this article is great and informative.
By the way, didn’t Time call Williamsburg the hippest place in America 15 years ago? It’s as if, in 15 years, Time got 30 years less cool.
Am I alone in this? It seems to me that whenever I read articles about Brooklyn in magazines (Time, New York, New Yorker, etc), there are lots of errors, inconsistencies, naivete even…the authors don’t appear to have done much research or fact-checking and are merely making casual observations. Just an opinion, but most of the articles I’ve been reading lately just leave me cold.
You guys are being very, very nice to Time Magazine. This article is retarded.
It would’ve been timely 15 years ago, but now– to call Park Slope “hip” is just absurd. We all know that it’s the land of Patagonia-wearing parents, not that there’s anythign wrong with that.
I mean, Time Mag. doesn’t have to be cutting edge, but it should at least do some reporting…
They’re Time magazine. It’s their job to be dorky. What would you expect them to run? “Sunset Park: More Than Just Porno DVDs!”? Or “Bed Stuy: There’s That One Good Cafe There Now!”?
I’m guessing the author or a friend of his just moved to Park Slope from Manhattan and were surprised to find such hipness in Brooklyn.
Don’t worry, 9:44, we’re just having a little fun…
Of course, don\’t forget about the Paradox of Gentrification: By the time those Asian investors arrive, PS won\’t be cool anymore….just very expensive. That\’s always the way it works, and PS hasn\’t been \”cool\” in quite some time. It\’s all about raising kids and money now.
i don’t understand. why can’t Time have an article about Park Slope? is that bad??
