A reader brought our attention to a photographic progress report on the LIU Athletic, Recreation in Wellness Center rising on Dekalb Avenue in Fort Greene. Designed by Arquitectonica, the $40 million, 100,000 square foot structure will have tennis courts, a swimming pool and a 3,000-seat arena. Ground was broken last Spring and completion is expected in October 2005. How are the neighbors feeling about this one?

It will bring some much needed light to the street of Ashland. I’m all for it. I hope the community can use it!
wow i hope you’re right, and i hope it’s not too expensive… ah what i would give for a swimming pool.
this is what it says on the website:
“Additionally, the center will house resources and programs to promote the health of community residents. Cardiac rehabilitation, orthopedic therapy and asthma education services are planned, as well as the installation of specialized equipment, such as a separate therapy pool equipped with a hydraulic floor.”
I don’t really understand from that what exactly will be available to the public… but I assumed neighborhood residents/non-students would be able to join. I used to belong to the UCSF gym in San Francisco, so I’m hoping it will be a similar facility.
is this going to be open to the community? i assumed no…
I think it’s great. Design-wise it’s not my own taste and I don’t know anything about Arquitectonica- but LUI is already an eye sore, and I think the services that the new wellness center will offer the residents of the area is exciting.
Arquitectonica seems like a really odd choice for Brooklyn, especially Ft. Greene. They are famous for a lot of the splashy high rises in Miami (think opening credits to Miami Vice) and more recently the weird Westin tower at 43rd and 8th. They’re not the kind of firm to really embrace the notion of context, unless that context happens to involve neon colors and palm trees.
