And in other traffic problems…A decade ago, we bet the last thing on Fort Greene residents’ list of problems was traffic safety. Crime? Sure. Lack of restaurants? Check. But now that the nabe is booming with charming stores and restaurants, the increased amount of pedestrian and vehicular traffic is creating problems at two intersections: Fulton and Lafayette (above) and Flatbush and Fourth Avenue. So far the Fort Greene Associations efforts to get the Department of Transportation to make improvements to the crosswalks and traffic lights in these locations have gone unanswered; the FGA has now brought up the matter with Community Board 2. We’ll see if they can get some traction.
Pedestrian Danger Zones [Historic Fort Greene]
“If the doors were at the corners, this wouldn’t be a problem.”
And if pedestrians followed the rules by using the crosswalks (even if it takes an extra 1-2 minutes), then this wouldn’t be a problem, either. Everything’s Ratner’s fault, isn’t it?
Has anyone noticed the idiotic placement of the doors at the new Atlantic Center? The doors are in the middle of the block and the roads meet at a 45 degree angle. To go straight across the street and into the mall, pedestrians are out of the crosswalk and out of view of cars turning from Atlantic onto Flatbush. If the doors were at the corners, this wouldn’t be a problem.
The reason no one gets a speeding ticket in NYC is because the money goes to the state. That is why the send all the time writing parking tickets, the money goes to the city.

Anon 10:31, noone is going 70mph thru Bklyn residential streets. While you have a valid point, exaggeration ain’t helping it…
houseowax,
giving motorists “the green wave” isn’t going to solve their rage problem. it’s just going to allow rageful motorheads to drive their 3,000 pound weapons through yr neighborhood faster.
People go down my street at 60-70 mph sometimes. Heavy traffic is indeed also speeding. Nobody ever gets a speeding ticket for this potentially deadly offense. I am wondering has anybody ever gotten a speeding ticket or heard about someone who did? (in brownstone residential brooklyn!)
There were just as many people in FG/CH 10-15 years ago–maybe more since many brownstones that used to contain several apartments now have one or two families only. The main difference is that there are more white people and wealthier people now. But the traffic problems were equivalent, except for the additional foot and bus traffic generated by the Atlantic Terminal Mall.
They will build the arena, Ms. brooklyn and the other 17 sky scrabers; realise there is a huge traffic problem, then we will get the overpass built all the way through residential and histiric brooklyn…. Now that is going to be just great!
