In April, Forgotten NY held its 20th walking tour. The neighborhood: Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The capacity crowd of 50 or so Forgotten Fans spent an afternoon exploring the houses, parks, cemeteries and waterfront of Tourmaster Kevin’s childhood stomping grounds. We were particularly taken with this shot of the James Farrell House on 95th Street (named after the Tammany Hall pol who lived there between 1890 and 1912). Built in 1847, the Greek Revival wood house is Bay Ridge’s oldest structure except for Fort Hamilton. After originally being built on the waterfront, the house was moved to its current location in 1913. Enjoy.

  1. If the AIA wants to call it the “Farrell” house then so be it.

BTW: I’m sorry I missed your tour it would have been fun to see the nabe in a different light.

    Thanks for the great pictures.

  2. The “Farrell” house is actually known as the “Bennett” House. The Bennett House is a Greek Revival Home built around 1847 for Joseph Bennett. The building was moved in 1913 to its present location on 95th Street between Shore Road and Marine Avenue. The house was given landmark status in 1999. A family purchased the home in 2000 and completed a total restoration of the exterior in 2004.
FYI: There is one other landmarked home in Bay Ridge. It is the “Gingerbread House,” built for Howard E. and Jessie Jones in 1916-17. This Arts and Crafts style stone building with a pseudo-thatched roof was once a summer cottage. This private home is located on the corner of Narrows Avenue and 83rd Street. The home was purchased by its current owners in 1985 and they sought and received landmark designation in 1989.
