Yesterday’s news about a fatal shooting in Bed Stuy (technically Ocean Hill, according to The Times) over a rent check was a sobering counter-balance to all the positive press the area has been receiving lately. Shootings can and do happen in every neighborhood in the city, so there’s no point in reading too much into this one. But this kind of thing can have a big psychological impact. When a friend of ours was brutally attacked in Clinton Hill last year shortly after we bought our house, it definitely shook us up. Both events are reminders that by far the biggest factor (in our opinion) in the sustained strength of the real estate markets of neighborhoods like Clinton Hill and Bed Stuy is public safety.

  1. The folks who think we have something against Bed Stuy clearly don’t read the site very carefully. We are constantly praising the neighborhood. As for thinking Clinton Hill is so great at the expense of Bed Stuy, you didn’t even read this particular post very carefully. We highlight a voilent incident that happened to a friend of ours in Clinton Hill! To assert that Bed Stuy’s dangerous reputation historically has no affect property prices would be completely delusional. Raising the issue of public safety hardly equates with “putting the stuy down”. Why in the world would we want to do that?

  2. if you read up on listings that he posts he always has something to say about the border!
always has something to say about the bed stuy prices! im not saying bed stuy is as safe as carrol gardens or anywhere else but quit putting the stuy down!

  3. you so 1 sided brownstoner … when u have a property on your site that’s on classon and the agents refer to it as clinton hill . your the first to say NO NO IT’S BED STUY .. now this took place in ocean hill. but you refer to it as bed stuy … your a bitch brownstoner… poor msr brownstoner for havin a bitch for a husband

  4. Steve,

If you think it through, its not in browntowner’s or anyone else’s interest (who owns a brownstone) to “keep prices down” in Bed Stuy. The more prices rise in bed stuy the more everything else goes up including brownstoner’s brownstone and those you speak of in Park slope. On a separate note, if bed stuy was considered as safe or had as good schools as other neighborhoods in brooklyn the prices of brownstones would certainly reflect that. The reality is that perceptions do affect prices. Your argument might be more persuasive if the neighborhood crime statistics bore out that Bed Stuy was indeed safer than say Park slope. I suspect they don’t. That is the reality browstoner in my opinion is speaking of.

  5. i think you hate the fact that bed stuy is actually getting close to a million as far as the good brownstones. its assholes like you that wanna see bed stuy kept down. you think your better than the black people that live in bed stuy? by the way im greek not black but that has nothing to do with anything. i have been looking at your website since you started it last year, i liked it up until now but you honestly pissed me off with the title you wrote!

  6. wtf does that mean? “Reminder of Reality”
you think cause your in clinton hill your better than the people in bed stuy? or that your in a better area? shootings can happen anywhere! your always trying to put bed stuy down, how? your always saying how much they are listing the houses for say they are crazy! if a house is half a block after the clinton hill border and the ad says clinton hill your sure to bring that up!
believe me my friend your no better than that person that lives in bed stuy! i own 2 brownstones in bed stuy and im very proud of that! so get off your high horse and you face reality. bed stuy is not a bad place to live! just cause of a few aholes you can down the entire community!
