As you can see from the balcony bicycle storage, actual human beings are living at 99 Gold Street as of about two weeks ago. Those of you who’ve been paying attention will recall that sales at the Vinegar Hill development stalled out this Spring, compelling the owners to turn the building into a rental. Since then, 26 of the 87 units have been leased, mostly to young professionals (though a couple of families have signed up). Most of the listings are going for $3,300 to $3,500 for a 1,000-square-foot one-bedroom-plus-office apartment (plus a 1/87 share in the basketball court).

i was soooo close to signing the contract. the units are super nice and one of the best rentals i’ve seen for the price and the amenities. honestly, the balconies might be rather small (but they are intended for firescapes anyway).. you do have a very very nicely finished roof deck (not like the rocket factory in W-B) and lots of other great things.
However, i have lived in brooklyn, next to projects, but when i went to check out 99gold st again at night (11pm) i did not feel that comfortable. It’s not that it is super bad.. but nobody is on the street and walking my dog at midnight would just make me feel a bit funny.
i think it is a shame though, bc as mentioned, these units are super super nice. i LOVED them.
not after I get there (insert maniacal, cackling laughter here).
I live at 99 Gold st (just moved in)
but have been around the area for the last 6 years. If you dont want to move here then DONT. My neighbors have been great and have no interest in stealing my bike or peering through my windows.
PS. VERY HAPPY WITH BUILDING AND LOCATION
Unfortunately the Farragut Houses are pretty bad. They were desinged badly, are maintained badly, and are one the worst public housing projects in Brooklyn. While it is true that one shares the city with the less fortunate, I think it is unfair to subject a child to this sort of thing.
It is really the underbelly of American society. Kids need bikes and pets and a supportive community to really thrive.
I agree that if one has the resources to shelter one’s children from the very worst aspect of our society, one should do so, regardless of the preachings of the self-righteous.
Those are marketed as balconies, but they are far from private. Your neighbors could just come on over and peer through your windows or hang out outside of your apartment if they so choose (or steal your bike if they wanted) since the balconies are wraparound.
Less fortunate soles?
Like the ones that had to move from the south street to hunters point?
I don’t think Glenn reads the police blotter. I get the impression from my reading that a considerable portion of the crime in the 84th Precinct is in and around the Farragut Houses. This includes crime on the Brooklyn Bridge walkway and street crime around the York Street F train station. Other sources (precinct council meetings, for example) seem to bear out this conclusion.
If this is one of the best deals, then I have fresh appreciation for my apartment, which seemed expensive compared to where I had been living previously. I pay the same on a per square foot basis as the cheapest units at 99 Gold, but also have outdoor space. Additionally, I am just as close to the subway, two lines not one, and am in a more established neighborhood with better services. What’s another ten minutes on the subway?
I considered moving to 99 Gold since it is close to where I work, but ultimately decided it was no bargain. (Insert obligatory and baseless accusation here that Glenn is somehow affiliated with the project.)
That was one of the best deals in an amazing location so close to Manhattan and so close to the train station to get to Manhattan. There are housing projects relatively close to anywhere in NY. People need to get off their high horse and realize that less fortunate soles live in this city too. The area is safe and is nice!
I was considering moving there with my wife and 3 year old son since the price seemed reasonable and the units look very, very nice. Changed my mind once I saw the g-map of the location; it is across the street from the farragut housing projects.
