The fastest growing part of Brooklyn is not Park Slope, Williamsburg, or Brooklyn Heights. It’s Downtown Brooklyn, according to the Post. Ten years ago, only 3,270 people lived in the 60 block area, today there are more than 9,000 people. Since 2007, 28 condo and rental projects have been built, with 30 others stalled by the economy. The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership estimates over 16,000 people by year’s end, as projects like Brooklyn Gold, and others, near completion. The Partnership’s Joe Chan estimates much more growth by 2012, and cites the building of Bruce Ratner’s Barclay’s Arena to boost the area even more. The impact of the arena will be historic. It is a gamechanger for Downtown and the borough.

  1. robotpony: Have you tried the Loading Dock for tacos and burritos? It’s my new fave lunch place. But you’re totally right about the lack of amenities in that area. I think they will come eventually, but in the meantime, Gristedes is your best option. Which is sad, because that place is vastly overpriced.

  2. robotpony- If I am not mistaken there was an article recently abut supermarkets disappearing from the city, or fewer new one being built for a variety of reasons, especially FreshDirect. Hopefully that won’t be the case for downtown.

  3. “and i have nothing against the buildings themselves. i LOVE high rise buildings and wish there were more. i just dont like the type of people these new buildings attract, that’s all.”

Butterfly or Rob whatever you go by ARE YOU SERIOUS???

Wow you dont like people to move into an area and actually have jobs and put money back into the local economy.I guess you would rather just have people hanging out on the corner bringing no substance to a neighborhood. You would rather have people in the area that only go to the 40 cell-phone stores or the Arbys. People like you dont get it. I am so tired of hearing about how people dont want change and so on.
This is the best thing that is happening to Downtown Brooklyn. I bet you were also agaists Metrotech as well??? Becasue that just brought a ton of jobs to downtown but I guess they should have left downtown alone.
Learn alittle about economic development and what needs to take place for an area to be built up. The apartment buildings are step 1 for that phase and good things will hopefully follow. This is great news for the area.

  4. @dirty hipster: They were on the hook and some were sleeping on friend’s couches in the interim. (I fortunately was not in that situation.) It resulted in a lot of frustrated people (see the Brooklynian blog for the whole account), but I think people are ok now.
