Just got an email from a reader who just received a robocall from ConEd saying there was a brownout in Downtown Brooklyn and that some elevators had already gotten stuck. Anyone know anything more? Update: Press release from Con Ed on the jump.

CON EDISON REDUCES VOLTAGE IN ADDITIONAL BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOODS

NEW YORK — Because of problems on electrical cables supplying power to eight Brooklyn neighborhoods, Con Edison has reduced voltage by 8 percent to that area.

The neighborhoods are Vinegar Hill, Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill and Cobble Hill.

The affected area is bounded by the East River on the north and west, South Oxford Street and Fifth Avenue on the east, and Third Street/Fourth Street on the south. The area includes approximately 51,500 metered customers.

Last night, the company announced voltage reduction in a number of other neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens.

Company crews are working now to repair the problems. Con Edison has asked customers in the affected areas to turn off electrical appliances to help reduce electricity usage until equipment problems can be resolved.

The equipment problems in the affected areas have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system. Con Edison will provide updates to affected customers both directly and through the media as the situation warrants. The company is in constant communication with the New York City Office of Emergency Management.

  1. I live on the Brooklyn Heights / Cobble Hill border, and I just checked with my dog walker who said that the power is still on and the A/C is working just fine in my apartment — for the dog.

  2. I’m in Brooklyn Heights and got the call a few hours ago. Family isn’t home right now so I’m not sure how significant this is.

The A/C has been much weaker the last couple of days and I suspected ConEd intentionally lowered the power to prevent an overload / blackout.

  3. I received an automated message from Con Ed about an hour ago warning of a low voltage condition here in Bklyn Heights. When we had some electric issues last week, I decided to buy a LED lantern…just in case.
