CON EDISON REDUCES VOLTAGE IN ADDITIONAL BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOODS
NEW YORK — Because of problems on electrical cables supplying power to eight Brooklyn neighborhoods, Con Edison has reduced voltage by 8 percent to that area.
The neighborhoods are Vinegar Hill, Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill and Cobble Hill.
The affected area is bounded by the East River on the north and west, South Oxford Street and Fifth Avenue on the east, and Third Street/Fourth Street on the south. The area includes approximately 51,500 metered customers.
Last night, the company announced voltage reduction in a number of other neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens.
Company crews are working now to repair the problems. Con Edison has asked customers in the affected areas to turn off electrical appliances to help reduce electricity usage until equipment problems can be resolved.
The equipment problems in the affected areas have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system. Con Edison will provide updates to affected customers both directly and through the media as the situation warrants. The company is in constant communication with the New York City Office of Emergency Management.
In must add, referring to my comment above about this bklyn brownout: I am thankful there are very smart (public works) people working on these things all the time.
I’ve been caught in the subway during a power outage. I learned there are catwalks down there. I think being stuck in an elevator would be the worst.
We have read about NYC services being on overload – held together by a “shoe string and a rubber band”, so to speak – electrical, sewer, water, garbage, street maintenance, etc. Not much room for expansion, as Denton already mentioned.
“Summers, which tend to be hot in NYC, have been occurring every year since FOREVER. ”
LOL! Too true. It’s like it’s a surprise to them every year!
Just had our elevators shut down in Bklyn Heights. The Con Ed memo notes that this could go on for three days. Now I’ve got a 6th Floor walk-up. I’m heading to the beach in the morning.
Checked my outlets, 120-125v here in SS/GH.
ET, thanks to nimby-ism, very little new generating capacity allowed in NYC. Can’t bring in more electric either. Trying to bring hydropower thru Orange County for decades. No one wants to be near hi-tension wires.
Texas does it right.
Summers, which tend to be hot in NYC, have been occurring every year since FOREVER. You would think ConEd would have figured out what to do by now.
We are East of Bedford between DeKalb & Willoughby and our power has been comlpetely out since 11pm last night. ConEd is estimating 11pm for restoration of power.
Isn’t this what ConEd does for a living? Got the same robocall this morning.
In Boerum Hill, and as of this hour, power seems to be stronger. It was weaker all morning. AC worked the whole time, though!
I prefer deliberate brownout to accidential blackout.
