armory
There’s a discussion going on at Brooklynian.com about the future of the armory at Atlantic and Bedford in Crown Heights that has been a homeless shelter in recent years. Evidently, Roger Green (who’s catching flack from Brooklyn Papers, among others, for killing the funding of the independent review of the Atlantic Yards project) mentioned at a community board meeting a couple of years ago that he was looking to convert either the Atlantic Armory or the one on Eighth Avenue in Park Slope from shelter to community recreational space. We don’t know what happened in Park Slope, but the one at Atlantic is still very much a homeless shelter–and at least several of the area residents are happy with it that way. Though we gotta admit, we wish we’d seen the Steel Pulse concert one commenter recalls seeing there years ago.

  1. The Park Slope Armory is currently being used as a 90 bed womens shelter and meeting space for veterans organizations.

In 2008 a complete building wide reno should be finished with a state of the art indoor olympic track and field facility, The space will be used for highschool sports and will be open to the public. It will be an awsome addition to the South Slope. Another reason to have more kids.

  2. the armory on jefferson in bed stuy is a homeless shelter aswell..what a freakin shame .Places like this should be used as art galleries ,neighborhood museum’s showing what the neighborhood’s looked like 100 yrs ago.

  3. Apparently they are modeling it after the very successful Washington Heights Armory conversion. That armory went from being a homeless shelter to being one of the greatest hotbeds of indoor track & field in the country.

  4. 12:15/18 is correct. Back story: Take the Field, which leverages public/private funding for sports facilities, looked at both armories to repeat similar conversions elsewhere in the city. There was only enough funding for one and the support for the Park Slope armory was strong; Bedford Avenue less so. Outcome as noted.

  7. The Park Slope armory is still being used, in part at least, as a women’s homeless shelter. There was a huge ongoing renovation there over the past few years, but there has yet to be, to my knowledge, any recreational activity there.

  8. “the crime is that we need homeless shelters…not that this is being used as one.”

I agree w/ your sentiment but wonder if this space could be used for a different kind of public good–as long as the homeless could continue to be housed in the community. Perhaps something like the Briarwood homeless shelter in Briarwood, Queens.
