Urban adventurer/photographer Nathan Kensinger, in a post dedicated to the late Bob Guskind of Gowanus Lounge, reveals the strange, and strangely beautiful, world that exists underneath the Coney Island boardwalk, from a small tent city to old building entrances. There are a bunch of photos to see, so check out the link.

  1. did a photoshoot under the boardwalk back in ’97. we found a hole in the chain link fence and snuck in. spent over half a day and no one bothered us even though it was a busy day at the beach. the filtered light is beautiful.

  2. “Great set for the opening scene of a teen slasher flick.”

Unfortunately, the area under the boardwalk was the setting for too many real life sexual assaults, etc. That’s why they packed in all that sand and sealed most of it off with chain link fences.
