“It’s completely out of control,” said Phil Caponegro, 51, at last night’s CB1 meeting to discuss mass transit’s failure to keep up with a surging population in northern Brooklyn. “You either have to squeeze in or let the train go by – and that’s in the middle of the day.” In addition to the much-discusses overcrowding of the L train at peak hours, residents are also frustrated that the G train only has four cars. With the population of Williamsburg and Greenpoint rising 30% over the last five years, locals are getting a taste of the downside of the real estate boom. “These neighborhoods are in such transition, and it’s a good thing,” said Gerald Esposito, district manager of CB 1. “We just don’t want to be victims of our own success.”

  1. Even the JMZ are starting to get crowded, and there has been a noticeable change in the demographics of the ridership. I normally take the JMZ and arrive at work much more refreshed than fighting my way onto the L.

  2. EXCLUSIVE SERVICE. The MTA, by controlling the supply of available subway seats on the L and G lines creates a kind of artificial demand. Soon people will stop at nothing to get one. My older sister gnawed off her own leg below the knee just so she can use the seats reserved for people with disabilities.

  3. yes sensible artists, sensible as long as they pay next to nothing rent. oh how the starving artists make our world so much better and we owe them. who cares about plumbers, doctors, architects, graphic artists, computer programers, janitors they contribute so little to society, always taking for themselves while the artists sacrifice so much to make my life better. i mean working 4 hours a day gets rough but someone has to do it. sorry for the tangent.

  4. I have a friend who’s moving out of Williamsburg because of the L train – mind you, she’s no hipster- her family has lived there since the early 1900s, but the commute is so bad that she just can’t stay.

  5. That’s what I keep thinking about all of these huge buildings they’re building in wmsburg- How will all of these people get to work?? In FG/CH, we have lots of trains so the problem is more widely dispersed– but in williamsburg– there are only so many people who can fit on the L…
