If that Bushwick mansion featured in The Times this weekend as a hotbed of creativity looked familiar to longtime readers, it might be because it was a House of the Day all the way back in March 2005 (old school!). Back then, the house was listed for $1,100,000, only seven months after selling for $365,000 (bubbleicious!). Needless to say, the new owner failed to flip it and we now know how he’s covering the mortgage. (We also know what kind of kitchen tiles and cabinets he sprang for in the renovation.) There’s no getting around the fact that this is one cool house. It’s too bad those eyesores got built right next to it though.

  1. Huh? Nothing wrong with what these people are doing. I applaud it. The writing was lazy and overblown:

    “Renaissance men and women”

    “hipper-than-thou music and art”

“Bushwick may not be East Williamsburg. But for those seeking the newest Bohemia, this neighborhood is arguably the coolest place on the planet. And few places are cooler than the white brick building with black trim that its residents call Cedar House”

    “A young math genius”

Perhaps the writer is unaware that similar groups of people do this all over Bushwick, the rest of the city and the whole country.

  2. I agree with dh, and somewhat with wine lover (although I am a proud “frickin’ conservative” and was fortunate enough not to be broke when I was younger).

The people seemed genuine and aren’t trying to impose their lifestyle on anyone else, or suggest it’s somehow morally superior.

  3. So wait – I’m confused. Please clarify Brownstoners

If young, presumably broke young people live in gentrified Brooklyn, they are douchebag hipster trustafarians living off Mommy and Daddy who reside in Akron or some equally horrible city out in flyover countrys.

But if they live in the hood, within their means they also get hated on.

    Where should they live?

Yeah, this was a stupid article – but hate on the NYTimes for deeming it newsworthy, not a bunch of people who aren’t bothering you.

  4. you guys are total a**holes. seriously. this is a great New York city story. people have figured out a way to get the space they need to make art or music or whatever. and, they’re inhabiting one of the brownstoners’ amazing old houses to boot. what’s not positive about this story?

do you not remember what it’s like to be young and broke? they’ve found tons of space and a garden and they are making a community. it is FABULOUS! jeez.

this board is so frickin’ conservative it’s gross. i imagine most of you screaming “get off the lawn” in your ill fitting shorts, white socks and black sandals. the women too.

everyone in america is obsessed with entertainment – where do you think entertainment comes from?? people have to create and they need to be supported. entertainment and arts are this countries’ number one export, and we excel at it. not everyone wants to stare at numbers and data on a computer screen for their lively hood.

  5. “It’s too bad those eyesores got built right next to it though.”

Don’t kid yourself. Just because a bunch of “Renaissance” artists live here doesn’t make this place “mansion” in any of the word, or significantly better than the housing next door.
