Have you heard the news? Bushwick is hot. “It’s what Williamsburg was in the ’90s [and] what SoHo was in the ’80s,” says Len Moroz, co-owner of Potion Café in the McKibben Lofts building. With the first several condo projects in the area having sold at well above expected prices last year, brokers (hardly an unbiased crowd) are predicting that more and more landlords will be converting their rental buildings to condos in the near future. So who’s going to buy all these new condos? “Artsy Yuppies,” says Douglas Elliman’s Lisa Maysonet, who’s had her hand in the sale of several new condos in the nabe. “They’re artsy in look and feel,” she says of the gentrifiers, “but not in occupation.” That is, they have a real paycheck but are still partial to the bed-head look. Do you think there are enough of these folks to fuel a continued condo boom in the area or do you not believe the hype?

  1. i lived on locust st between broadway & beaver in ’02. there were stripped, burned out cars around the corner on a regular basis, rats all over the place, a methodone clinic round the corner, a live chicken butchering place too & drug dealers across the street.

our building was robbed countless times, our neighbors hated us for raising their rents & we felt completely isolated from the rest of nyc. it was AWESOME!

  2. ‘Park Slopin’:
I think everyone agrees with you that they rather live in “pristine Brownstone Bed-Stuy and Stuy Heights” then Bushwick. The only problem is unless you have close to a million Dollars you won’t be owning in that area no time soon. The rental income is also low in Bed Stuy. In Bushwick you can find 2-Family houses for an affordable price and get a Solid Rent roll to help out with the Mortgage. Back to Bed-Stuy; have you ever been to Hart and Throop? How about Gates and Lewis? Myrtle and Nostrand? Do any of these streets ring a bell? I guess not “Park Slopin”! Bed Stuy is Flooded with Projects and plain Ghetto ness. I owned there for the past 5 years and couldn’t take it anymore, had to go. Tired of the summer long Barbecues, 24 Hour Dice games, late night music playing, someone always hanging out in the Corner Bodega. Had to go…

  3. Jimmy Legs,
White Boy isn’t hardcore, but they did put out the first “punk” record in DC. More like proto punk gross out stuff like the Gizmos. It was a middle aged father “Mr. Ott” and his son. Their best track is on the Limp “Thirty Seconds Over DC” comp, but they also had a number of 7″s on their own Doodley Squat label. Mr. Ott later went to prison (may still be there) on child abuse charges.

  4. I like sigourney weaver (aliens). Strong, quick-thinking, kick-ass, capable woman. I’m personally a little tired of those chicks in the action/horror films who sits in the corner while her boyfriend does all the work fighting off the attacker. How bout’ lending a helping hand every now and then.

  5. sylvia is a total loon.

it’s amazing how much tenacity she has though on consistently bitching about the same things over and over.

i’ll give her credit for that.

perhaps we need to have a movie made using the characters of brownstoner.

who would play sylvia??? my vote would be sigourney weaver!!

  6. sylvia, you’re funny (hilarious, actually). I guess I would be offended if I lived in bushwick. I’ve only been to that neck of the woods a couple of times (driving through). But I suspect that it isn’t half as bad as you make it out to be. Thanks for the laughs anyway. I wish u would hurry up and buy an apartment or house. I think brooklyn needs more people like you around.

  7. “try Void, poseurs”

yeah i have alwys been partial to the Faith side of the Faith/Void split and generally think Void are a bit overrated…..Minor Threat,Scream,GI..even the later Rev Summer bands like Rites of Spring,Soulside and Embrace are better than Void IMO…

    Poseurs?
