blimpiesIt’s old news around here, but the NY Times just picked up the story of Blimpies’ controversial opening on Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene (and gave us a nice plug in the process). Kenny Eng, a regular Brownstoner reader, is quoted as the voice of moderation in the story, saying he’s fine with the sandwich chain but that he understands why some of the folks who’ve paid big bucks recently for a place in the nabe want something a little more upscale. The one addition to the story we hadn’t been aware of was that Blimpies had agreed to one aesthetic concession–the removal of a security gate that neighbors had found particularly unsightly. In the end, the story gives the sense that most inhabitants are resigned to letting market forces decide whether the franchise is meant to be.

  1. could ever a topic so worthless get so much coverage and press? the blimpie is in a corridor thst is commercial, whats the problem? park slope has rite aid and the neighborhood hasn’t fallen apart. it also has polio (real name deli) which is much better then subway on 5th avenue and subway does much better. maybe it’s this thing called seats in the place. anyway first poster, it will be there to stay. it could be worse ,you could have another shitty bistro/cafe charging 20 dollars for brunch. why is thatless offensive?

  2. “Ugly! Nasty! GET OUT of Fort Greene!”

I thought the same thing as I looked at “real” locals throwing trash on the ground in front of bus stops, blaring car stereos and doing drug deals.

  3. Does Ritchie have B1G1 free coupons? Tech and the students from nearby Bishop Loughlin will keep this place in business forever. Ask the guy that owns the Mickey D’s on Dekalb Ave.

  4. Blimpie sandwiches are all bread and lettuce. If you want a real hero or wrap just walk down to 713 Fulton Deli.Ritchie will make you a hello of a sandwich there. The neighboorhood deli’s will blow this place away.
