According to The Sun, things got so bad in Bed Stuy back in the 1980s that one local precinct spray-painted (officers tagging?) the words “The Alamo” on the wall of the station house. Two decades later, crime is down and property values are up, though not everyone–including long-time renters and property owners who resent newcomers benefiting from what they see as the fruits of their labors–think the trade is worth it. Crime’s down 70 percent or so since 1990, roughly in line with city-wide trends, while brownstone values have just about doubled since 2003. “People don’t feel quite as safe as the police reports, but they feel a lot safer than five, ten or fifteen years ago,” said Colvin Grannum, head of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Project. Change is coming from out as well as within: In addition to the Home Depot that opened last year, spots like Bushbaby, a gourmet coffee shop started by a Bed Stuy native, are starting to replace the nail salons and bodegas.

  1. 1. I wasn’t agreeing with her that the post should be deleted- I was agreeing to something else (don’t remember the details at the moment). Hate to surprise you but I still believe in freedom of speech.

    2. As I said you can interpret the sheet comment anyway you like, however I wouldn’t inflict your value system for insults an other people. Different things have different meanings and personally I equate flagellation with the practice of whipping slaves. Seems to me that’s worse, especially in the context of this thread.

3.I simply asked but if I recall you and Mr. B had a little set to when you posted a rather snide comment on one of the garden threads. You posted as anon and he outed you. If I remember you apologized for your comments. You were also taken to task by several other posters for nastier than necessary comments. So while I may be surprised that you posted as anon (I was when you did so on the garden thread) I’m not surprised that you get nasty. Kinda makes you seem a hypocrite, doncha think?

  2. If he had presented a different view in a reasonable, logical way I would have answered in the same manner. But he didn’t. He simple decided to be nasty. How is it you don’t have a problem with his post? As far as playing the race card, as much as we like to claim we are arguing economics and social class, not race, it’s people like anon 3:25 who make that the lie it is. All of the people who complain that Black people don’t want them in their neighborhoods, or that they are discriminating against whites, seem to forget that Whites were doing it too. And first. I remember when I was in grade school haivng to walk past a gang of 4 big white boys beating up a small Black kid- just because he was Black. I never forgot it. We had maybe 5 Black families in our neighborhood. Maybe you think that was ok. I don’t.

  3. (1) In the last Friday open house thread, stuyblkbutterflie said that the “icky” post should be deleted. Your response (I’m cutting and pasting because I don’t think we can post links here): “I with you, stuy blkbuttrflie.” Perhaps you meant, “I’m with you, but I believe that he or should have the right to express that opinion here, however offensive to you or me.” But I guess I didn’t catch that nuance.

    (2) I think you both have every right to post what you posted. But yeah, I think it’s more offensive to call someone a Klansman simply for disagreeing with you, than to call someone a “flagellant.” Call me oversensitive.

    (3) As to your making the ad hominem insinuation that I was anon 3:25 (which I’m not but obviously can’t prove — ooh, nicely played!), I’m not surprised at you one bit.

  4. So much for subtlety. Go straight to the white sheet when someone might have a different view than you on the complicated issues of race and class. Why play the race card, when you can throw the whole deck instead?

  5. Excuse me? I never said that about deleting posts. And in so far as anon 3:25- let me get this straight- it’s ok for him to get nasty but not ok for me to reply? As far as the white sheet goes- interpret it as you like. (or are you anon at 3:25, Linus?) In which case I am surprised at you. If it’s not you I totally take it back.

  6. Just to make sure I have this straight:

    * When somebody calls a neighborhood “icky,” their post should be deleted.

    * When somebody calls someone else a Klansman, we’re cool with it.

Unless you were calling anon 3:25 a ghost, in which case I totally take it back.

  7. No, anon at 3:25- all you need to do is look in the mirror and repeat this mantra- ” I’m cool…I’m cool…I’m an ignorant dolt…but I’m cool. Yo!”

It’s not as good as a hair shirt or flagellation, but if it makes you feel more comfortable you can say it while you’re wearing your white sheet with the eyeholes.
