Bed Stuy Brownstone With Ornate Ceilings Needs Renovation, Asks $1.199 Million

This three-story brownstone at 949 Greene Avenue in Bed Stuy needs work, but the potential is there. It measures 20 feet wide, and has some nice original details.

The builders went the extra mile with the ceilings on this one, with elaborate detailing on the parlor floor — nice inlaid parquet floors as well. There are also moldings, pressed tin wainscoting in the hallways, an original newel post (painted), and a fireplace on the garden level (though none on the parlor level, sadly).

The condition doesn’t look terrible from what’s pictured, but the listing, from Dan Bentov and Adam Sikorski of Compass, has the “bring your contractor/architect” admonition and makes a point of saying the house is being sold in “as is condition,” so there’s no shortage of work needed.

Among the tasks will be reconfiguring. Right now it’s got a separate unit on the garden level, but without a proper bedroom; the top two floors would make a good duplex, but right now there’s a small kitchen on each floor.

The ask is $1,199,000 (more than double the $575,000 it sold for in September, according to Property Shark). Think it will move at that price?
