We got an email over the weekend from an out-of-towner who’s coming to New York next weekend to scope out Bed Stuy and Crown Heights for a probably move in the near future. He wants to know which streets in particular he should check out to get a feel for the best these nabes have to offer architecturally…We thought this could best be answered by local residents, so what do you think?
I am looking at property in Bed-Stuy, too and have come across a new development called the Myrtle Townhouses that look quite charming. I am scheduled to see it this weekend with the real estate company aptsandlofts.com. From the pictures online, looks quite charming. Go to their website, http://www.aptsandlofts.com and do a sales search for BedStuy.
perhaps my comments were a bit too inflammatory- i was not trying to say that the possible buyer was definitely looking to buy cheap and flip, or to gain cred and save money by living in the ‘hood (my definitions of an adventurous gentrifier, by the way). i just wanted to ask the guy who’s looking to be mindful of the neighborhood he is moving into- while I’m not pretending to have discovered the place (far from it)- there are plenty of families who have been in Bed-Stuy a long time that are getting priced out of the neighborhood by rapidly increasing rents. Look, gentrification is a sticky topic. I just moved out of the neighborhood, actually, because I didn’t want to deal with feeling like an interloper anymore. There are no clear winners and losers in a gentrifying/gentrified neighborhood. I just caution any potential buyers in Bed-Stuy to be aware of the both the up- and downsides to the neighborhood and to be sensitive to those issues before shelling out your money. Good luck, “guy who’s moving in”.
to the a-hole – if they are so bad, Leave !!!!!
And please do not come back.
Great landmarked block, great view of park, close to train – Chauncey Bewteen Lewis & Stuyvesant
when you look in the 2 areas make sure you wear a bullet proof vest, and if possible carry a 9mm pistol. Why? because those 2 neighborhoods are the scum areas of the united states. how do i know? i walk thru them everyday.
Thanks so much everyone for your input — TQT included — and special thanks to Brownstoner for posting my inquiry. I’ll be walking the neighborhoods this Friday and Saturday to get a feel, and I’ll be sure to check out all of your recommendations. Thanks again!
Define “adventurous gentrifier,” TQT? Let’s see… does it bother you that a person might move in and take care of his home and be considerate to his neighbors and respect the detail of his brownstone and the history of his neighborhood? Sorry, TQT, but that we don’t need any “thankyouverymuch” is so freaking old. Get over yourself. Or are you the Lewis and Clark who discovered Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights? By the way, how is it any of your business if he is looking for a good deal? Haven’t you ever in your life done the same?
best area for me is decatur between lewis and stuvesant, the block is beautiful great pro, people and its 20 minutes from the city
Two areas in Crown Heights that I would single out: President Street around Brooklyn Ave, and the area around the intersection of Park Place and Hampton Place. Very different but both are stunning in their own way.
