flea market
We went to check out the flea market in Manhattan yesterday for the first time since it moved to its new digs on 39th Street and Ninth Avenue. Back in our twenties we were complete flea market addicts. Back then, before “mid-century modern” had become a household phrase, we found a real sense of adventure in the experience. Yesterday, the whole experience left us feeling pretty uninspired. Maybe our taste has changed or maybe flea marketing’s success has been its undoing. Whatever. All we know is we only found one item of interest – a pair of glass table lamps that were beautiful but at $600 for the pair certainly didn’t feel like flea market pricing. And the furniture selection? Lousy.

  1. I shopped often on Sixth ave & 26 St. when I was furnishing an apartment for myself for the first time in a long time. I agree with your take on flea markets up to a point. To find the bargains, you have to get up early to beat the dealers, and you have to go often because the merchandise comes and goes so quickly.
