Nobody does mid-century modern and California better than The Brick House. Here, photos of the bedroom in progress. We like the spare quality of the decoration — and we’re long-time fans of striped blankets. Owner Morgan Satterfield lives near Palm Springs and mines low-cost resources such as Craigslist and thrift stores.

A cracked foundation spurred a whole-house renovation of a circa 1830s Georgetown house. They opened up the back and the staircase and are still working on one of the bathrooms. Check out the child’s handprint in the DIY concrete counter.

After a year of DIY renovations at their recently purchased 19th-century farmhouse in upstate New York, Abbey and Phillip Hendrickson weren’t finished, but they threw a big party anyway. About two dozen people camped overnight. Now they are always having big messy dinner parties in their dining room, here, one of the first spaces they transformed with paint, a refinished floor, and a new light fixture — all of which they did themselves. We can relate because we bought our house hoping to have big dinner parties too, but ongoing renovations have made that impossible. After three years it’s still not done, but we think we’re finally ready to start inviting people over anyway.
