stairs
The last major aesthetic decision we need to make for the house is how to finish the stairs. The linoleum has been removed from most of them, leaving us with what you see above. We’re going to keep the banister its current dark wood color and will probably paint the vertical back of each stair white. What do people think we should paint the stairs and the spindles? Keep in mind that the hallway floors on each landing are going to be natural wood with poly. Thanks.

  1. I bought a runner for our place and it’s great, altho a tiny bit fashion-forward (neutral with a couple stripes running up both sides. Looks better than it sounds). But our home in also 5 flights up with 4 full landings and the thing cost – ahem – over 5k.

  2. with the kids as a factor, we were thinking we should carpet at least some stairs – our stairs turn at the landings, which I’ve heard dramatically increases the cost of a stair runner…any experiences? also any ideas for carpet for the runner that’s not faux oriental or sisal?

  3. Bstoner, will you carpet the stairs? If not, I can understand you painting them a dark color. If you do carpet just the stairs, or do a runner, then I’d do like the other poster and paint the non carpeted stair edges the same color as the spindles.

  4. We have a similar set up. We have the stripped beautiful mahogony bannister, but the spindles were paited an ugly brown. We painted the spindle the same white as the baseboards, painted the edge of the stairs (rises and treads the same color, an are carpeting from the wall to the spindles. That way we avoid expensive and difficult stipping. We are going to wax and oil the banister to bring out the natural wood colors. If you were to do the same thing, you’d have to think of the landings where you’d need to be very careful not to get paint on the floors when painting the spindles.

  5. Correct. Need a solution that’s fast an inexpensive. Want to just sand the stairs, spindles, etc. and paint. We’re leaning towards a dark step, white riserm white spindles and natural bannister (which is dark). Do you think if we went with a dark brown for the steps that it would look like we’re trying to fake a wood color?
