Apartment Therapy had a great reno slideshow yesterday of a brownstone duplex in Fort Greene. The owner did a fairly radical reno that included creating a massive skylight and making transparent plexiglass flooring. Except for the bathroom (which we think will look a little trendy and outdated as time marches on), this strikes us as a very successful design that is both fun and modern while being respectful of much of the space’s original detail. Agree?

what beauty was destroyed in this brownstone? the place probably needed a total gut, what’s the difference if he opened the floor plan up and created a series of smaller rooms like many brownstones have. a plexi-glass floor isn’t permant, it’s like any other floor. instead of plywood or planks over joists then covered by hardwood or carpet or tile etc there is plexi-glass. you can easily replce that floor. putnam-denize is right, most of these old row house didn’t have any great detail to begin with and even if they did little of it is left at this point. many of these old houses were made for working class people and they weren’t that grand to begin with.
Well isn’t everyone in a good mood today! This isn’t a grand brownstone with beautiful wood etc – it is a small brick rowhouse. Many smaller rowhouses really aren’t in that great shape and don’t have much detail. Looks like owner here preserved some. If my house is any guide the construction quality was pretty crappy to begin with, and if you have to rebuild it to make it sound, why not do somehting different? The spaces inside were configured for a different era and can feel very claustrophobic. Nice to open it up and create a more modern floor plan. And I assume the poster threatening to call DOB over someone’s decision to use plexi-glass flooring wasn’t serious. I didn’t realize that this forum was for us to tattle on each other.

to be fair we have no idea what shape the brownstone was in when he got it..but to me, even if he had to gut it, this looks ugly…like an updated ugly 1980s design.
whats the mea number on plexiglass flooring? I am caling the DOB.
i don’t mean to be a grump (maybe its all the in-store holiday music that’s doing it to me), but, isn’t this kind of old news? i saw this in the paper 8 months ago….
If you want to live in a loft like space with a bathroom that looks like it’s straight out of correctional facility, then just buy a loft space.
Don’t destroy a brownstone.
I liked the skylights on the roof but nothing else.
I have to say that I agree with the hermes bag anology that one of the commenters made. Why buy a brownstone only to renovate it to the point of being unrecognizable. Go Figure!!!!!
