A reader sent along this picture and a few details about 78 Douglass Street, which recently sold after being on the market for years and is now being renovated. The property, between Smith and Hoyt, had been on and off the market since 2008, asking around $1.5 million. It went to auction with a minimum bid of $700,000 and sold for $1,385,000. Now the two-story property is getting a third floor and “penthouse” unit, according to a DOB permit. Our tipster says: “I just hope its not going to be a monstrosity like its next door neighbor.” We’ll see! (Check out a picture of both homes after the jump.) Another reader wrote in with this comment about the reno: “Needless to say the hood ain’t happy.” GMAP P*Shark DOB

The addition is really disproportionate but all in all, I’ve seen much worse. At leas they made an attempt and from the street it reads like a mansard roof. I don’t think you can see the top floor from the street at all. If you want to see a true travesty, look at the additions to the old Board of Ed building on Livingston. In all honesty, I would probably love to have that kind of light and big window myself.
that is a dormer window on steroids.
wow. who lives there? the cat in the hat?
