Yesterday morning the LPC voted to designate St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church complex in Williamsburg a NYC historical landmark. From the LPC press release: “Located at 334 South 5th Street at Rodney Street and completed in 1885, the complex, which is surrounded by an iron fence, occupies a prominent corner lot and consists of a church with a four-story bell tower, a three-story parsonage and a two-story school and chapel building attached to the east side of the sanctuary. The red-brick and terra cotta-faced buildings were designed by Josiah Cleaveland (J.C.) Cady, a well-known architect who was also responsible for the American Museum of Natural History.” It was built for Williambsburg’s booming German population and now serves a large Latino congregation. There’s a 1949-vintage depiction of the structure from the Brooklyn Eagle after the jump. What a bell tower! GMAP
Fabulous. I need to wander around Williamsburg more often for these gems.
Back to say that Cady was an undisputed master of designing with brick. This church complex, the Union United Methodist Church around the corner from me on Dean and NY Ave, and his houses on Pacific and Herkimer Streets are all masterpieces of brick, expertly done by master bricklayers. Lots of masters! If you are near any of these buildings, it’s a lesson in architecture just to see the intricacies and nuance in his use of an ancient and humble building material.
Congratulations to those who worked very hard for this, including the Waterfront Preservation Alliance. It’s a beautiful complex by an important architect. Kudos!
That’s great! It’s a magnificent building. Cady also did a church around the corner from me- one of my favorite buildings.
Jesus is having a really good week in Brooklyn.
Thanks to Montrose, I just learned who Cady was yesterday!
