Vinegar Hill is the latest lucky recipient of the Forgotten NY treatment. The blog of all things old in New York goes back as far as 1798 for the Battle of Vinegar Hill and, of particular interest to us, looks at the history of Hudson Avenue, shown above in this photo from 1977. Turns out the street was a thriving commercial stretch in the 19th century. Lots more goodies on the link.

  1. Kevin had a Forgotten NY book come out last year–as fascinating as his website, gift-hint to the preservation wonks among us. (We already have it, keep it in the guest bedroom so the guests can hopefully figure that our tumbledown house is a true piece of “Forgotten NY” as opposed to just an old mess…)

  2. So interesting to finally get a more complete history of our neighborhood! Ours is the last door/stoop featured in the piece. I won’t despair next time I step in dog poo outside, I can just scrape it on the boot-scraper!

  3. Of course, I think this is very cool. I’ve only driven through here a couple of times, and have wanted to walk around for a while, camera in hand.

Kevin Walsh and Christopher Gray are my idols and inspirations. They’ve made our city’s history a living and interesting concern. You could spend a lifetime learning about this city, and still never know everything.
