New Brooklyn Theater to Hold Meeting About Slave Theater

The New Brooklyn Theater, which is trying to raise $200,000 on Kickstarter to buy the historic Slave Theater at 1215 Fulton Street in Bed Stuy, is holding a community forum Sept. 27 to build support for its cause. Meanwhile, the owner of the property, Rev. Samuel Boykin, is already in contract with an unnamed buyer to purchase the property, said a spokesman for the New Brooklyn Theater. The New Brooklyn Theater “can be a partner in a development, if we can be in a position to forcefully voice the community’s wishes for the building’s preservation,” said the spokesman. Boykin contacted the New Brooklyn Theater earlier this week and “wants to keep the door open,” the representative said. The forum will take place from 6 to 8 pm at Restoration Plaza. The postponement of an earlier foreclosure auction expires Nov. 5, according to a statement put out by NBT. No word yet on what NBT will do with the money if it raises the $200,000, but the theater sells to another group.
