We were browsing the website of Lost Brooklyn Trips this morning when we came across a page of historic photos. This one caught our eye but it was unlabeled. It looks to us like it would fit right in on Clinton or Washington Avenues, but we don’t know for sure. Can anyone help ID the location or architect of this building?

  1. This address is 670 Bushwick Ave. Bklyn N.Y. It once belonged to the catholic church. The nuns would live here. Across the street on Willoughby Ave, the priest would live. The structure was purchased by a doctor named Clement Davis. He was a wonderful doctor that gave so much to this community. He actually helped bring me into the world. His office was on the first floor. The second floor my grandmother and grandfather lived. The third floor Dr. Davis would live. We were all very close. I still remember my grandmothers wonderful cooking which Dr. Davis so loved. My grandfather would take care of the grounds. I remember we would put a good shine on Dr. Davis’s chrome Excalibur.
Each and every sunday would be so much fun. The second floor had a wonderful wooden porch where we would all take in a breeze on a hot summer night. This was once such a wonderful neighborhood. Thank you for posting this wonderful photo. It brings back wonderful memories. (This place was no mystery for me)

  2. the old mansion is right around the corner of where i live. it is across the street to a kfc. the building is not in good condition but has a strong foundation. i do wonder what its worth today. and how much it cost when purchased???????

  3. The building is located on Bushwick ave, near myrtle ave. across the street is a kfc. i live a block away from the mansion. its a huge house needs alot of work but a really strong foundation. i wonder what it is worth today and how much when he purchased it???

  4. My original thought was this was on Bushwick Ave in bushwick (I swear I thought this before I looked at the bottom of the photo & saw that it says “Residence of Dr. ….. Cook .. 670 Bushwick … ” Bushwick Ave is home to a lot of very nice buildings, back in the day it was where all the brewery owners lived.

In fact, forgottenNY has a big page on it:
    http://www.forgotten-ny.com/STREET%20SCENES/bushwick/bushwick.html

Near the bottom of the page is the Arion building which has since been restored as the “Opera House Lofts”

  5. I’m gonna go with Mr. Brownstoner’s leanings that it is in Clinton Hill. I think it’s that building on the NW corner of DeKalb and either Clinton or Waverly. I’ll check later and get back.

  6. Hah i thought I recognized the picture then I saw the link to my site – thanks! I’m starting to ride again for more pictures and updates – i’ll ride down McGuiness and see if I can get a few new shots of this building.
My actual site url is http://www.lostbrooklyn.org for anyone who wants to come in from the main entrance –
    see ya!
