Bed-Stuy Patch has a variation on a tune we’ve heard plenty of times before, but it’s still worth a listen: When will expanded landmarking in Bedford Stuyvesant become a reality, and how to make it happen? The map above (click to enlarge) shows the existing and proposed landmark areas and the article breaks down the distinct designation pushes thus: “The current movement to landmark in Bed-Stuy is spearheaded by 3 different coalitions: The Community Board 3 Landmarks Committee, The Bedford Corners Joint Block Association and the Stuyvesant East Preservation Action League. The four districts proposed for landmarking are: Bedford Corners, The Stuyvesant Heights Extension, Stuyvesant East, and Stuyvesant North, encompassing more than 60 blocks. During the summer of 2010 the coalition started a door-to-door petition campaign where its members spoke directly to approximately 300 homeowners. Stuyvesant East held two community forums in the spring of 2010 and the community board has held several forums over the past two years. ‘Without community support, the LPC is not going to do this,’ said Peri Defino, a committee member of the Stuyvesant Heights Extension. ‘If they don’t see community support, they walk away. So people cannot be complacent and figure somebody else is going to do this.'” Meanwhile, Bedford Stuyvesant Society for Historic Preservation is an e-clearinghouse for the expanded landmarking efforts.
Community Consensus: Why LPC Really, Really Needs to See It [Bed-Stuy Patch]

Thanks for the info.
BedStuy Maven, I already live in Landmrked Stuy Heights. I was just curious why the map only showed new landmark considerations concentrated below Gates.
11216 – LPC completed a study of Bedford Stuyvesant last summer and the area norht of Gates was surveryed. LPC would be able to tell you If you area was determined to be landmark worthy. If you are interested in pursuing landmark designation for a particular area in the North, we can helo you with the processs.
Following is a link to the Landmarks Conservancy survey which includes 3 areas in the north. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&gl=us&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=104137522593583797349.0004761194952b7c73b25&z=14
The areas were surveyed for eligibility for the State and National Historic registry. I would guess that the criteria used by Landmarks Conservancy is similar to that used by LPC. Again, just like New York City Landmark Designation, the process has to be initiated by the community.
Landmark designation for Shannon’s Garden was discussed, however, there was no consensus among the residents and the matter was tabled.
Will the side of Halsey between Ralph and Howard be included?
@mopar, indeed, I would love to see Stuyvesant East extended to Hopkinson and to Broadway (to enfold you) but since LPC prefers phasing in smaller parts and adding on, the best approach is to get the main part designated and then extend the perimeter.
Yes, mopar, since we made that map a few months ago, revisions have been in order and will be forthcoming. The current version is strictly based on the NY Landmarks Conservancy (not to be confused with LPC) map on Google maps.
Lovely Saratoga Park and the buildings on Macon Street and Halsey Street that face it will be included.
Oh, BedStuyMaven, I see you answered my question about boundaries. Thank you.
Shouldn’t Bed Stuy East include Saratoga park? That square is incredible looking. Also there are some totally unaltered wood frame houses on MacDonough between Saratoga and Thomas Boyland. The houses on Decatur and Bainbridge are just as fine to Thomas Boyland or Broadway.
The city considers areas east of Saratoga to be Ocean Hill, but my neighbors say they live in Bed Stuy. In any case, can’t it be included? It’s every bit as historic.
Amzi, jinx!
bedstuy11216, there’s some great stuff north of Gates, but most of it is not clustered together in the same way it is to the south, which makes it harder to landmark. I think there are some blocks that are more than worthy, and some individual buildings that should be protected. Some of the individual buildings may have more of a chance to get landmarked if the effort is taken to do so, but they’d have to have a great deal of architectural, historical and/or cultural significance. From what I know from living in the area, and from working with the good folks who’ve posted above, the community will is not there, either. But that may be because no one has tried to rally them. Depending on the success of the areas south of Gates, the movement for landmarking may grow.
