theater
How’s this for a coincidence. Yesterday we posted a photo of the old Loew’s King Theatre which prompted a reader to report that the city’s Economic Development Corporation had just issued a request that day for expressions of interest to rehabilitate the historic structure. Proposals can be for just the theatre itself or may include plans that incorporate adjacent parcels of land that the city owns. If you’re interested, you’ve got until December 6 to submit your ideas. To get the creative juices going, consider attending the site tour on October 24 at 10 a.m. More deets on the link.

  1. Maybe BAM should take over this theater, as a 2nd theater for their Cinematek programs and screenings, both 1st-runs and revivals/lectures. It would create a lot of goodwill that they’ve lost by their ambitious gentrification development planning in the Fort Greene community.

  2. The mandate from Marty Markowitz and the EDC is to “RESTORE THE THEATER TO A WORKING THEATER”. It is truly a stunning interior and wonderful piece of history from when Flatbush Avenue was the Madison Avenue of Brooklyn… and if Marty can get this done, he might not go straight to Hell for Atlantic Yards, just spend a couple hundred of years in Purgatory. (then back to hell if he lets Thor Equities screw up Coney Island!)… But THIS, this is a good thing… hope they can pull it off and we’re NOT looking at a chopped up space ten years from now… Check out the video at EDC: http://www.nycedc.com/video/LowesKingVideo/brooklyn.mpg

  3. Old movie theaters along this strip have been converted into churches (such as the Jehova’s Witness church, I think, at Flatbush and Albemarle) and into shopping (a Modell’s, discount dress shop and a now vacant drug-store or bargain store) at the old Kenmore around the corner on Church Avenue. Unfortunately, the Church Avenue site has not been able to hold a successful tenant at its corner location — probably just too big.
