Using My house as an Event Space
I have a large place in Prospect Heights, and would like to rent it out on occasion for small venues such as weddings, engagement parties, etc. I do not have a commercial grade kitchen, but access to a professional chef who has a food handlers license. Is anyone aware of insurance issues, food prep issues I would need to know? Is this possible to do? Thanks.

You would need to obtain a permit you can get a hugh violation. I advise you to conact DOB and get information on procedures and policies in reference to this.

How many people are you talking about hosting? Beyond insurance, FDNY could shut you down if you do not have a temporary PA (Public Assembly) permit for each and every event. In order to get this, you will need to file with the DOB PA plans that illustrate your space can properly egress the anticipated occupancy. If the space cannot demonstrate compliance, you may be require to hire fire marshalls to stand guard at each event to help file people out in case of an emergency. I know all of this sounds really crazy, but I don’t think you want to entertain getting a fine from the city for this kind of violation. Tread lightly.

It is a great idea, but make sure that even a separate event policy would cover you. I’m not sure it will if the space is a private home not set up legally for this purpose. Remember, anyone will sell you a policy, but getting a claim paid is an entirely different matter. This seems high risk. I tend to be a risk taker, even reckless at times, but I’m not sure that even I would do this, as tempting as it appears.

You should require anyone that rents your home out to obtain event insurance listing you as additional insured because your home policy will not cover any liability or most likely damage resulting from commercial usage. The event policies are usually not expensive ($300 on average).
