How to find zoning for a commerical property?

I looked up the address on DOB website and it said **Department of Finance Building Classification:** G9-GARAGE/GAS STAT’N This fits because it is like an old auto body shop, but how can I find out what else I can use the space for?  I thought it should start with either an R (residential), C (commercial) or M (manufacturing)? Any suggestion on how to find its zoning?  Thanks!

You’re allowed to put kitchens/cooking facilities in manufacturing and commercial spaces.  Indeed, you can put a whole catering establishment in as well.  It is also possible to put in a shower room and laundry facilities (for employees.)  However, you will need to file an affadavit with the department of buildings attesting to the shower’s (non-residential) use.  As stated above, no residential uses are permitted, and when  you file the alteration , you will need to be careful that nothing resembling a “bedroom” appears in the plans.

Woodworking workshop is permitted use, but you are right about living there is not legal. I don’t think you can put a regular/residential kitchen there. It won’t hurt to check the current c of o, if there is one.

Woodworking workshop— I realize it may not be legal, but what if it was officially an office/studio space and I lived there too- can I get away with putting in a regular kitchen and a full bath in an office or art studio space?
