repair antique pocket doors?
We recently purchased a 1910 building in Ridgewood, Queens, and a set of beautiful antique pocket doors with stained glass were glued and nailed shut by the previous owners. Our contractor pried them out with a crowbar (without checking with us first!) and the wood is pretty damaged, especially in the area where the latch once was. Can anyone recommend someone who can repair/restore them? And reinstall? Many thanks! Photo of the more damaged of the two doors is attached.

Yes, any finish carpenter can easily fix the damage and install these and get them working again. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to recommend actual tradespeople since I work for Brownstoner. Having now read two posts about your contractor, it sounds like you need to be clear with him that your intention is to save the original detail — though it also sounds like he doesn’t have much understanding of this approach. BTW if you are doing plaster skim coating, be sure to use fiberglass mesh under the first coat so the cracks and peeling don’t come back.
