NuVue windows
Green Thinker – thank you so much for taking the time to explain. I will see how the consultation goes tomorrow, but am leaning toward fixing these and then in a few years put good windows in once and for all. Once again, thank you for your patience in explaining all to me!

Has anyone ever dealt with Nuvue windows? One of the Brooklyn suppliers recommended NuVue windows for a rental apartment, claiming aluminum was better than vinyl. These are actually very well priced, at very much the same price point as vinyl. Are these windows okay? I understand they are not great or even good, but will they do the job for the next 10 years or so? Thanks so much

While i’ve never dealt with that particular window. They seem to be your standard aluminum window made by a few guys by hand in some shop. Vinyl windows are always more efficient than aluminum, aluminum is a great conductor for heat and cold to pass through. They’ll say it has a thermal break, but it’s still not as efficient as vinyl. I’m sure they would do the job for the next 10 years or so. But there are better options out there, that are still affordable and will do a better job. I recommend you look into “Renewal by andersen” Which are made by a reputable company that have been in business for more then 100 years and are computer built in a modern factory.

GreenThinker – thanks for this. Good to know re vinyl efficiency, since I’m paying heating bills. Just called Renewal by Andersen and they are a full service operation, ie, I cannot use my own contractor to install. So that won’t work out unfortunately as is bound to be a lot more expensive than the current option (around $200/window). Any other suggestions are most appreciated. Thanks again.

Another suggestion would be the Andersen 200 Series. Which you can order at Home Depot. Sometimes they have promotions, when i was ordering windows i received 10% off. Other times if you open a credit card with them they’ll give you 5-10% off a single order.

I checked with Home Depot and unfortunately they have very limited sizes. Neither the 100 or 200 series carry the sizes I need.

Have you checked jeld-wen? I have their builders grade sliders in a rental apartment, they were put in 15 years ago and still work just as well as the day they were bought. At least they’ll come with a energy star label and a warranty. I have a cousin that works in one of those Brooklyn window shops, and from the things he has told me, I could never recommend a window from such a establishment.

Yes. Jeld-wen come to about 35% more and twice as expensive if I go with bronze/black. Problem is that the sizes are 30×70 & 82 and I need 10 and possibly 12 of them.

http://longisland.craigslist.org/mnu/5166191648.html Just a gem I found with a quick search. Tape measure experience needed only. I guess your only choice is to go down the window shop route. But I’d look into other businesses, two which come to mind are windows we are or RK windows. Btw, you could possibly have the option of putting in wider windows if it’s a wood framed house. When they would replace the original original windows, I mean the ones that were put in when the house was built, they would build out the original opening with 2×4’s and put in a narrower window.

Brooklyn Window & Door sells the Andersen range although you might have to order & wait. BTW, despite the advertising message, Renewal By Andersen is not owned by Andersen – it’s a franchise of its own.

Green Thinker – oh no! Experience not necessary, must read tape measure! That’s that then)). The house is brick, so I cannot make the windows wider. The problem is actually their height. Vinyl do not make 82’s. So the choice is wood or aluminum, and custom. I’ll check out the sellers you suggested. Meanwhile, am having a window expert from Home Depot come and let me know whether I can perhaps repair the windows I currently have. Arkady – Andersen are far to expensive since I need very tall skinny windows with brown/black exterior. The wait is not a problem. Renewal By Andersen do not allow own installation, so they are out too. Bedstuy Neighbour – thank you, will also call them tomorrow. Thank you all very much. I guess I now know that windows are not cheap. Especially that it’s a multiplying cost, since it is most always more than 1\.

If you currently have aluminum windows, those are pretty simple to fix. Usually just the balance mechanism needs to be tightened or replaced. Thing is, standard aluminum windows you buy now, are pretty much the same as 25 year old aluminum windows in other houses. Sure, the glass might be low-e or what not but the air infiltration rates and overall efficiency of the frame is the same. So you might as well fix the frames you have now. In the long run, it’s best to do windows right the first time around. You’re going to spend a good amount of your budget simply paying the contractor to install windows that are only as good as the ones you currently have or marginally better.
