New Windows for a landmark building
Is it true that landmarks will only consider all wood windows for the front? Would they consider wood windows with a vinyl frame? What about the back, is there the same requirement for the back facade that is not visible from the street?

Whether it’s a job interview or that nerve wracking blind date, first impressions can make all the difference. When it comes to the initial reaction of visitors to a home, nothing sets the tone more effectively than the proper entry windows for your house.

I was told by a staffer at one point, that there are also some circumstances in which they will accept aluminum (NOT vinyl) one-over-one double hung instead of wood.

Landmarks does (or used to) approve sash kits, which fit wood sashes inside the existing frame with some sort of plastic tracks. When we replaced our windows in my old coop on Clinton Avenue we did those (with metal? ones in back). I think it looked awful. But landmarks approved it.

I have never heard of Landmarks approving of a vinyl frame; and I must say it does not sound like a very good combination structurally to me. I doubt very seriously that you could get the correct molding configuration in a vinyl frame anyway. They are very concerned with the correct molding configurations. They do not want capping of any description. I have had aluminum clad wood windows approved by landmarks for a house in Fort Greene. The rear windows so long as they cannot be seen from the street, even standing a 20′ ladder with no leaves on the trees! Landmarks has no say in the matter.
