Fire escape window guard

I believe it needs to conform with Fire Dept regs. Don’t spend money before you know them.

Hello, We are renovating our apartment and want to replace the horrendously ugly fire escape window guard. The current one swings open, which is pretty obtrusive, but I haven’t been able to find any of the older accordion/scissor style guards that, at the very least, would be able to fold out of the way. The window is oversized and is in the middle of our kitchen/dining room, so we’re trying to find a solution that is somewhat attractive and lets in the most light possible, as this window is the only light source for that part of the apartment. Any ideas/leads are appreciated. Thanks, Alex

Do you really need such a gate? IMO accordian gates are even uglier than what you have and aren’t especially secure. Years ago Consumer Reports suggested making effective window locks in wood Windows by drilling completely through the top sash, partially through the lower one, and inserting a 3/8″ ring bolt.
