Plaster Wall Repair Assistance

I’ve got to patch the plaster around this wall grate (the grate has been sandblasted and cleaned of the layers of paint since the photo was taken) and although I’ve looked online for how to do it, I’d love some recommendations from some DIY Brownstoners. What materials and tools do I need and how can I create the edge so that plaster doesn’t get into the area where the grate fits in? Anything and all other recommendations/advice is welcome.

An add to the above suggestions, might be better to not be gentle. A good scrape of whatever is loose means you want to make sure no loose stuff is under your repair, cause that would undermine your repair. Things expand and contract differently. With a metal grate inset like that, it has some likelihood over time to crack again. Dig out around the edges and fill back with plaster of paris then skim coated with joint compound. Taped edges is one good idea, perhaps another suggestion is something called “L Bead” (pick attached). You can find it in the sheetrock section of home dumpo pretty cheap. Goes on same as corner bead but the finished metal edge will be next to the metal edge of the grate, similar materials next to one another behave better. Plus the clean edge looks sharp and is easy to get a nice clean finish. Hope that helps! Matt R www-nyc-hs.com

I’d tape the edges.

Gently remove any more loose paint. Add thin layers of joint compound until low areas are filled. Sand as needed prime and paint.

I’m not sure why the pictures didn’t load, but hopefully they will this time.
