Removing thin set, replacing tiles

Hi Brownstoners- We have a number of ceramic cracked tiles to replace in the kitchen — what is the best (or easiest rather) way to remove the thin set before so as to then add new thin set and replace said tiles? Many thanks! Cat

Depending on what thinset was used and how old, it could be rubbery or rock hard. I would try to remove with stiff, sharp scraper, which usually works prety well. I’m thinking a “hyde” type 7-in-1 type scraper. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it can’t stick up too much.

you won’t be able to remove thinset without taking off some of the drywall paper, but that’s fine.  pry and/or chisel it off, try your best to not put an actual hole or get into the gypsum of the drywall (brown paper is fine).  Then throw thinset on there to level it out if need be, and then throw another coat of thinset on it to attach the tile.

Hi, I’ve done this and it’s easy. Here’s a step by step from This Old House that is pretty straightforward! http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/how-to/intro/0,,20051584,00.html
