Mosaic Tile Entry Restoration

Hi, I found a tile mosaic situation underneath layers of linoleum in the entry to our Brownstone and I want to clean it up/restore it. Attached is a photo of the condition – any suggestions on what I should do to it? I am unsure if it needs grout or some kind of glazing or if broken pieces should be repaired or replaced etc. Any thoughts are most welcome! Thanks! fitch

Funny, i just discovered similar encaustic cement tiles buried beneath layers of vinyl and linoleum in my vestibule. See attached photo. If you’re still checking this, let me know what you ended up doing!

Ok, that one worked. I wrote a longer explanation after the Williamsburg Guys. The issues have to do with the substrate under the tile, not grout. Anybody with Victorian vestibule tile, or considering this type of tile elsewhere in your home or building lobby, or other options for vestibules, feel free to contact me directly. Vestibule tile settings are warm weather projects. Trip hazards can be stabilized or corrected any time, but it takes time to order the tile and schedule the work. The doors will be open during work. The stoop protected and used for workspace. Mortar needs warm weather to cure properly. March may be the next install dates for Vestibules.

there’s a company called ‘stone guard’ that does nice work. just send them a picture and they will give you a price by phone. i’d say grout and buffing will make these look perfect, but i think they look good as is.

As a side note, Alan at Green Mountain Construction (on here frequently) also works on these old encaustic tiles and has some restorations shown on his website. He could tell you more about what kind of grout would be suitable (I suspect a lime mortar thinly watered down as that was all that was available at the time these houses were built). I bought some and repointed my brick with it and it is really fine sand and a lime putty base. If he thinks that is what to use and you need a small amount, I have some I could give you. I would wait on him or someone knowledgeable about these tiles to chime in however.

What a lucky find for you. Ours is similar and also have a few broken but they are all there and at 118 years old I think they look beautiful. Maybe one day I’ll attempt to find some salvage pieces to replace the 3-4 that are cracked, but truly when clean the cracks are not distracting. I’m not sure they ever really had a “proper” grout. Seems the common technique was to simply abut them together and any gaps over time filled with dust. I suppose they could have used a non-portland cement based grout, but I definitely wouldn’t use anything containing portland Cement as that is too hard for these tiles. I think yours look great as-is. Clean them up really well with soapy water and a small brush, dry them, and enjoy. They warn not to seal them or use anything containing ammonia to clean them on all the old-house sites.

You are so lucky. It looks amazing! It looks to be in perfect condition in the photo. I don’t see any broken or missing pieces, but if you do have missing bits you may be able to match them via American Restoration Tile in Arkansas, though I am not sure they make cement tile, only ceramic. Your grout looks good to me, but if there are pieces of grout missing and coming loose, this is an easy fix. Any decent tile person could do it (you could do it). Just be sure to use grout that matches the existing grout in texture and color. (Tiles are not removed for this — you just dig out some of the old grout and add new.) Not sure about sealing. Sealing is usually done on unsealed porcelain hex tiles. If you do get it sealed, be sure to have it professionally steam cleaned first, then sealed.

Lucky you! It’s beautiful. It looks like encaustic cement tile. You might try asking Gavin Maloney (http://gavinmaloney.com/?paged=2). He is upstate now but was in Brooklyn for awhile and had worked on such tiles in brooklyn.
