How to clean vestibule tile

We just moved into our ditmas home and have a lovely entry with seriously filthy tile, saddles and missing tiles. I would love to do a deep clean of the tiles and saddles and looking for comments on how to do so (I am assuming the tile is ceramic and the saddles some sort of stone). Also looking for a source to fill in the missing tiles at the edges. Thanks!

I am still here. Thanks for showing the picture. As Cate said, American Restoration Tile makes this kind of mosaic floor, but I don’t know about a few replacements. You can ask them. Cleaning depends on what is stuck to the surface, but it is hard to penetrate in to it. The marble thresholds are another matter. I can not enlarge your image to see clues about the substrate. How much effort and expense you should go to on an original floor depends on how long you can expect the old substrate to continue to bear weight without crumbling, cracking, or shifting. It is an old floor using the same method as even older floors. Even with a larger picture, I would have to look at it to say much more. I will be working in Ditmas Park for the next few weeks and may return in the spring. Call me if you want me to stop by. I am in the directory under tile.

Muriatic acid is very harsh and you can do it yourself, but be very careful and wear protective clothing and glasses. It takes a lot of careful work and time, so I’d be inclined to try steam cleaning first. I used the muriatic in a tiny bathroom and it worked well but took forever.

Muriatic acid isn’t difficult to use if you follow the directions but be careful since it eats away lime – the main ingredient of the tiles. What ever else you do, don’t use ammonia of any kind. I did many applications of Clorox soaked on paper towels that I covered w/ plastic sheeting & it worked very well. You can replace saddles w/ new ones if the old ones are too damaged.

Our 100+ year old hallway tiles looked much better after our contractor cleaned them with muriatic acid…hired someone, because this acid is dangerous to use for the average do-it-yourselfer. May not be suitable for your tiles, depending on how they were made and finished.

Our vestibule tile wasn’t bad, but I had Stanley Steamer clean all of the newer tile in our kitchen and bathrooms and the before and after was a huge difference. Maybe the steam cleaning is bad for those old tiles, but if not, I highly recommend it. I had tried all kinds of harsh chemicals and scrubbing on the tile and grout in those rooms and made little progress; a couple of hours and a reasonable price and the SS guys got it all back to the original color.
